Typos are a great way to get additional search engine traffic for your keyword(s). We’re all only human and we make mistakes. And we do them when we search on google, yahoo or other search engines. And we can use this knowledge when we make a website.
For example: We’re selling “BirthdayFlowers”. It’s quite easy to make a mistake here, for example leave out a letter, double the letter, skip a space etc. And now you get a wider range of search keywords for your original one:

How can you use this in your advantage? Quite simple. Make additional pages to your original one, but use the typos on these new pages. Use them in your title, description and in your body text and in your alt tags (images).
And now people who will mistype BirthdayFlowers with Birtthday Flowers will get to your website! And the good nows is that you’ll probably rank high in the search results, because there is not such a competition with the mistyped keywords as it is with the original ones.

Make Your WordPress Blog Search Engine Friendly

The video is by Michael Gray from GrayWolf’s SEO blog explaining on how to optimize a WordPress blog to make it more Search Engine friendly.

Some things you can learn from this video are to put a post in only one category to prevent content duplication (Google and other search engines penalize sites that have duplicated content), make use of the ‘more’ feature to prevent content duplication in homepage, single post page, category pages, etc and use a robots.txt file.

To prevent duplicated content in category pages, tag pages, yearly archives or monthly archives make sure your theme uses post excerpts there. Also create a robots.txt file to tell search engine bots which pages on your web site should be crawled and indexed.

"After I revealed this blog’s traffic summary of April 2007, I got a few requests to do this on a monthly basis. So I thought of doing it this time too, and I revealed my AdSense earning this time since many people keep asking me.

On May 2007, this blog had 159,304 unique visitors and 252,305 pageviews according to Google Analytics.

What about this blog’s earnings? Through my highest earner, AdSense, I earned $1,218.75. Close to what John Chow earned through AdSense - $1,246.50

The Power Of Anchor Text

The keywords in the anchor text of incoming links to a site is one of the most important factors for ranking well for the keywords you target. Knowing this well, John Chow got his blog to the the number one position for the keywords ‘make money online’ by offering a free link back to the sites that review his blog and link to his blog homepage with the anchor text ‘make money online’.

However he is making a mistake by getting people to link his blog with only an anchor text of ‘make money online’. If too many sites link his blog with the same anchor text, Google will be able to find out that these are artificial links and may soon kick his blog out from the first page of the search result itself. Infact this happened recently.

To last longer for the keywords you target, get sites to link you with a variation of the keywords in the anchor text. Having a variety in the anchor text of your incoming links is a signal that those links are natural.

Example: If you are trying to get your site to rank well for the keywords ‘make money online’, try to get sites to link you (or buy links) with a variety in the anchor text like ‘make money online surfing’ and ‘ways to make money online’.

This way Google may not figure out easily that you are artificially trying to rank for some keywords and you will last longer once you are successful in getting to a good position for the keywords.

Or you could try to make some good post on making money online, like a guide, and then Digg it. If your post gets to the frontpage, you will get thousands of incoming links to your post and pretty soon you may get to a high position for the keywords you are targeting.

If you are confused on which anchor texts to target, try using a keyword tool like Overture. Also check out this backlink anchor text analyzer and checklist of the factors that affect your rankings with Google, MSN, Yahoo.

Direct Ad Sales

Usually a blogger uses a service like Text Link Ads to sell links on their blog, but the problem of using these services is that they take a cut. Doing a private link sale can benefit you more as you get to set your own price and nobody takes a cut.

Maki has written a series of articles on developing Direct Ad Sales as an alternative revenue source to make money online. You can find the first article and an introduction to the series here.

Before trying to do a direct ad sale make your your blog has good traffic, Google Page Rank and Alexa Rank.

Affiliate programs

You can also make money through Affiliate programs like Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction. Text Link Ads, ReviewMe and Aaron’s SEO book also offer affiliate programs that many bloggers use.

There are many more affiliate programs, but you have to choose the ones that match your blog.

BlogAds

Through BlogAds advertisers can choose to place from simple text ads to flashy ads on your blog and the prices will vary depending upon the ad format. BlogAds allows you to set your own price. You will need an invite to try out BlogAds.

To do well with BlogAds you need to place BlogAds above the fold and need to have good pageviews.

In-Text Advertising

If your web site delivers more than 500,000 page views of text based content a month, you can signup with Kontera or IntelliTXT to display relevant in-text ads. Kontera seems to accept sites with low traffic, but to earn well with it you will still need high traffic.

FeedBurner Ad Network

You can monetize your feed with FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN), but you may need around 500 RSS readers to get accepted.

ReviewMe

Placing ads on your blog is not the only way to earn through blogging, you can even get paid to blog. Services like ReviewMe will pay you to review services and web sites that are of interest to your readers. ReviewMe sets your review price based on your Alexa rank, Technorati Rank and number of RSS readers. You can also set your own review price.

To get good number of review orders from ReviewMe advertisers, your blog needs to have a good rank in Alexa and Technorati and have good number of RSS readers.

Chitika

If your blog is product related, Chitika eMiniMalls (a cost per click advertising program) can turn out to be your biggest money maker. Check out Darren’s review of Chitika and tips on how to use them.

Tribal Fusion

Tribal Fusion is another CPM based ad program. To get your site accepted by Tribal Fusion your site will need to have a minimum of 2000 unique visitors per day. The ads they serve can annoy your readers though as they are flashy and sometime with audio too. They even have popup ads. You have the freedom to block the type of ads you dont want displayed on your site. I have blocked ads of type adult, flashy, audio, violence, popups, etc.

It is good to have to have CPM ads on your site as your site visitors don’t have to click them for you to get money, they just have to visit the page with the Tribal Fusion ad. CPM ads can do well on pages where Cost Per Click (CPC) ads don’t do well like on your blog’s homepage.

To try out Tribal Fusion, your site must have:

A minimum of 2,000 unique users per day
Highly targeted, relevant and regularly updated content
Professional site design
An active user base

Guide For New Bloggers To Make Money Online

Recently I wrote on how bloggers make money online where I listed out the commonly used ad programs to help bloggers realize that they have to add more revenue sources to make more money online.

But if you are running a new blog, you should not slap your blog with ads from all these ad programs. Before monetizing a new blog, you must first focus on feeding your blog with quality content and on increasing your blog’s traffic.

When your blog reaches around 500 unique traffic per day, you can start monetizing it with either Google AdSense or Chitika eMiniMalls if you have a product related blog.

AdSense

AdSense is a contextual advertising program for which publishers have to add a piece of code to their site that helps Google analyze what your page is about so they can serve ads on that topic. This increases the chance of your visitors clicking the ad which increases the chances that you will earn from them. AdSense is a quick and easy way for bloggers of all sizes to display ads that are relevant to their content.

AdSense also allows you to make money by using Google Search on your site that will display relevant ads when visitors search on your site. AdSense also has a referral program that allows you to make money by recommending various products like Firefox toolbar, AdSense, Adwords, etc.

When a publisher who signed up for Google AdSense through your referral earns $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5. When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payout, you will be credited with an additional $250. If, in any 180 day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus!

I use many revenue sources to make money through my blog, but AdSense is my biggest money maker. I highly recommend AdSense as a way of monetizing a blog, especially for those just starting out.

Text Link Ads

Text Link Ads (TLA) is another ad program commonly used by bloggers to make money through blogs. With the help of Text Link Ads you can sell simple text links on your site. The monthly link price will depend on factors like your Google Pagerank and Alexa rank.

Text Link Ads has an affiliate program that will pay you $25 for any referred visitor that is accepted into their publisher program and installs the advertising script on their site for seven days. If you refer an advertiser who purchases an advertisement, the referral will appear in your affiliate account within 24 hours.

In order to attract advertisers and sell links on your site easily, your blog must have a good Page Rank and Alexa rank.

Vizu

Vizu Answers helps you earn money from your site by placing interactive Polls on desired topics. They pay you based on CPM (Cost per thousand impressions), and you even get to set the minimum CPM rate for each poll you put up on your web site.

Vizu takes half of what you set as the CPM price. Therefore if you set your CPM price as $4, you will get payed $2 for every 1000 impressions. Since Vizu is CPM based, you will earn according to what traffic you have. The more traffic you have the more money you make.

Make Money Online With AuctionAds

AuctionAds is a Cost Per Action (CPA) based ad program that allows you to monetize your website by displaying live eBay auctions that match the content of your website and you make money online when your visitor buys products they are interested in. The great part about AuctionAds is that it can be run along with other ad programs like Adsense.

Like Chitika eMiniMalls, AuctionAds works best on product related sites. So you won’t be earning much by placing AuctionAds on non-product sites, also remember that you won’t make money unless your visitor buys the product.

To make more money with AuctionAds you can try blending the ads by changing its colors to match your site’s colors and using the right keywords that match your site. AuctionAds has also explained on how to specify the keywords.

The bad part about AuctionAds is that it is not contextual, meaning you won’t get any targeted ads to your site. You will have to manually enter the keywords relevant to your site.

Using Tags as AuctionAds Keywords

However, WordPress users who use Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin can use tags as the keywords for the AuctionAds. Using this method you can have more relevant ads on your single post pages and thus earn more. Techtites has explained on how to do this here.

Chitika Linx is an In-Text Advertising solution, similar to Kontera’s ContentLink and Intellitxt, that is currently in beta and being offered only to selected publishers on an invitation basis.

Publishers who own product based sites or blogs may find Chitika Linx useful, but do keep in mind that this type of advertising can be annoying for some of your site’s visitors. I have been using Kontera’s ContentLink for some time now and it has been performing quite well.

AdSense Now Lets You Use 3 Linkunits

AdSense have updated their policies today and now allows publishers to have 3 link units per page. Earlier they used to allow only 1 linkunit per page.

Link units look like navigation links and when placed near your main navigation links can perform well. Linkunits got me $166.70 out of the $1,218.75 that I earned through AdSense last month.

I currently have 2 linkunits on this blog, one below the navigation and another that I just added below posts. I am interested to see how well the second linkunit will do over the next few days.

Make More Money With Less AdSense Ads

After reading the experiment done by Jane to test the theory that having less AdSense ads on your site gets you more money, I decided it to give it a try.

I removed the link units from this blog leaving just the 336×280 ad unit below the post title and within a few days my AdSense earnings almost doubled!

I thought my earnings would return back to the usual earnings the next day but it has continued to increase so far. If this increase in my earnings continues, it could be true that having less AdSense ads on your site gets you more money.

This is how Jane explains it

The theory is that sites bid for their ads to be placed on contextually relevant web sites with the highest bidders getting the best adsense spots (the higher the better). If you only show 4 ads in 1 block, then adsense will place the highest 4 bidding advertisers in those spaces netting you the highest profit. The more ads you show, the more lower-bidding advertisers show up on your page that when those get clicked, your cpc becomes lower than it could be if they weren’t on your page to begin with.

With the removal of the link units, this blog also looks a bit cleaner and I won’t lose much visitors for low cost per click.

Try this experiment yourself for a few days and see if it helps you to increase your AdSense earnings too

Kiss YouTube offers the easiest way for downloading video clips from YouTube. To download and save a YouTube video clip, just add the word “kiss” to the video URL in your browser address bar and hit enter. And then click on the download link provided to save the video to your computer.

Remember to save your video with .flv extension so that you can play it with a FLV player.

For example, if your YouTube URL is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiCn6y6JU8o, you can download the video clip by inserting the word “kiss” in front of the youtube.com domain name. Hence the example video URL will become http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=BiCn6y6JU8o

Hongkiat.com defaced and hacked

defaced

Cely woke me from my dream telling me hongkiat.com was hacked and defaced. I totally did not see this coming, but it is entirely my fault that I did not upgrade to Wordpress 2.2.1 as soon as possible.

The Damages

The defaced messages sounds quite personal, it seems like the hacker has been following my entries. Besides defacement, the database was gone too but I managed to recover from a backup copy. Entries for the pass 2-3 days were gone.

I thank those who took the initiatives to inform me through e-mails, IMs, and text messages. It should be fine now. It hurts but lesson learned.
